Understanding sexual decision-making in young people: the role of psychosis

People with mental health problems are at greatest risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) due to higher engagement in sexual risk behaviour, compared to the general adult population. Research examining the effect of psychosis on engagement in sexual risk taking is very scarce, especially in young people with less chronic conditions. It is important that we understand the effect of psychosis, and indeed the effect of pharmacological treatment for psychosis, on sexual behaviour in order to determine the best approach for ensuring they can protect themselves from HIV/STIs. The current research aims to investigate the personal impact of psychosis on sexual behaviour and sexual risk taking in people aged 18-35 years who have either experienced an episode of psychosis or have no history of psychosis. Recruitment for this project has recently commenced.
